Biography - Jennifer Lee Shulman

Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, yet family moves brought us to live in several provinces. I spent 20 years and had a successful career in the beauty/fashion industry in Toronto. However, I feel at home here, in Québec. It is in the Eastern Townships where I have spent my summers all my life, in harmony with nature. Since 2002, I have dedicated myself full time to painting, photography and sculpture with clay. I am independent, imaginative and fascinated by light and color, and their effect on each other. You will find artists, musicians and photographers in my family heritage...it is in my nature to create. Self taught initially, I have had the privilege to take courses from various artists over the years. Most recently under the guidance of Mme Kofahl-Lampron the subtleties of light and composition in my work has grown. I regularly participate in exhibitions, symposiums, enjoy the support of group studio work, and have started to have my work shown in galleries.
Artists Method

It is the extremes in light and its' effect on colour and shape that intrigues me and moves me to try to achieve these effects on canvas. I love nature in all its’ forms and the variety of imagery one finds within it, from a huge sunset filled sky to the smallest details found inside of a larger image, and how all of this is influenced by the effects of light.
I prefer to work with acrylic paints, often playing with its’ fluidity under the influence of water, pursuing blended and smooth results, and with the objective of maximizing the effects of light. Consequently, I use brushes, fingers, hands, or pieces of fabric to control the paint and to build my forms, contours, and colours. The result is that each painting is unique, like a jewel. I have a passion for abstract and figurative genres of art, and my work tends to fuse the two together. Creative evolution brings the spatula into play at times, where I enjoy the challenge of working with texture and of sculpting light into other series that I work on.
After years of creating my abstract series (Kaleidoscope), my attention has evolved to also creating a realist series that I have named, "Garden Divas". These paintings present my passion for flowers and their magic..... their structures and colors, that pull emotions from deep in our hearts. I work from photographs that I have taken of these unique creatures, who sing out to me every time I explore gardens. This is the inspiration of the name of this series, since I find them to be, as the star in an opera, standing tall, and revealing their beauty in their 'faces', singing for all to hear. I am enticed deep into each flower and this is the image I create on canvas...a larger than life 'close-up' of a flower. I find this level of 'magnification' brings an element of abstraction into my observation, and can trigger the imagination. I use the same painting technique as found in my abstract series, and I am presently working on creating a large inventory of these 'Divas'.
My series “Kaleidoscope” is a focus on abstract, and is a voyage into the “micro-world” of fractured images in which I explore hi-lights and reflections of light on curves, spheres and surfaces. I am initially inspired by the split-second image I see in a kaleidoscope, an image that strikes a chord in my heart and in my mind. It then takes form in my imagination, and I tap into my knowledge of fine-art techniques and my ability to paint (and visualize) instinctively. I enter into this tiny world of luminous, fractal images, and try to create three-dimensional effects through colour, light, and darkness. This series represents a study of complimentary opposites in form and colour, and is playing on the fractal concept where an image is divided into repeating images of varying magnification, and of opposing mirror reflections, all with intense illumination from behind the shapes and forms. They represent a “microcosm”, perhaps molecular, but it is certainly open to what the imagination finds within. Although abstract, it is quite organic and emotionally intense.
Both of these series reflect my keen observation of the cycle of nature, which is constantly creating and evolving. As light changes through the day, I find images around me, becoming a very magical and visual theater for my eye and my imagination. This daily evolution resembles a kaleidoscope to me, and becomes a metaphor. Life and art are evolving and affected by curves, reflection, the weakness or brilliance of light and is always full of colour.
Once a painting is finished, I sign it simply Jenniferlee, a fusion of my first and middle names, which has survived the cycles and fragments of change in my life. It is thru my paintings that I hope to capture all of the concepts and to portray these fractal images as a reflection of life, its' struggle, belief, and growth....constantly evolving into the future.
